Inspired by moving to Wales. I paint and draw ‘My Patch and Beyond’ as I see it.
I have loved Wales from being a child and since moving here, I have had the time to pursue my ambition to paint. Previously my practice had been inspired by the grand beauty and majesty of the Welsh landscape , remaining mindful of its traditions and the industrial despoilment of its past. Yet I found that over time Wales always had the ability to respond, recover and regenerate and this narrative was strong in the work that I produced.
However now that I live here, I have been more interested in the authenticity of rendering the ‘ordinary’ beauty of the place, not so much its ‘epic’ nature. I am working in the established ‘landscape tradition’ that these isles are most famed for and as a consequence am painting using oils on canvas and watercolour pigments on paper, finding these to be my most stimulating methods of work.
The colour blue seen in an open sky, the pattern of interweaving branches on bare winter trees, the texture of tree bark against a scattering of leaf litter are my current preoccupations. So a view down the village road or the sight of a small place down at my feet gives me ample inspiration to follow my artistic pursuit.
