Two Cumbrian Icons will feature in my work during 2016. in a recent poll by Cumbria magazine, number 1 was Alfred Wainwright and number 2 Beatrix Potter. (2016 is the 150th anniversary of her Birth).
Acrylic/Watercolour. Illustrated Maps and Tactile Maps suitable also for visually impaired as they have a relief quality. They have “cross over” appeal for both sighted and visually impaired people.
I have developed my style from images drawn in past years to enable blind people “see” our mountain heritage. Using “swell paper, I retain the relief quality, for the Illustrated Maps in my “Map Man Collection”. These include, Snowdonia, Lake District, Brecon Beacons. There are also Maps of walk routes that include, Offa’s Dyke, Pembrokeshire Coastal path, Coast to Coast, North Wales Pilgrims Way and the Mawddach Trail. Similarly too my “Mountain Collection” of the mountains of Wales, Scotland and Lakeland, come in relief on notelets as well as framed and mounted panoramas. Thanks to Carol, another FVACN member, these images are now reproduced(not in relief), on China mugs, Coasters, Table mats….etc.
BBC little Painting Challenge 2015.
Along with 29,000 others, I entered the Challenge with Four of my relief/tactile post card designs. Two of my designs were selected to go on show at the Whitworth Gallery Manchester during May 2015. The images are from my Mountain Collection. This is probably the first time Picture Post Cards have been produced that are accessible to both sighted and visually impaired tourists.
